Drama on the steenboksvlakte
It was 22th Oct in 2017, we were travelling through Southern Africa on a road-trip with TIVA travels through Namibia and Botswana. It was not our first African adventure but this journey certainly had stretched my comfort zone.
We were camping in Okaukuejo campsite in Etosha NP in Namibia.
We had a full day of game driving in the beautiful park Etosha. As of 6 am we were driving from one waterhole to the other and we found an abundance of wildlife. When we arrived at the steenboksvlakte we ran into some young boys. The lions were obviously inexperienced but opportunistic and they were stalking the other animals.
Later that day back in the camp it seemed all guests were as tired as could be. Our guide Tim is passionate about nature and wildlife and he was curious if any action would still happen at the steenboksvlakte. Anyone care to join him ? Off course, my wife and I embarked on another adventure we would always remember.
When we came back at the steenboksvlakte the young lions were there resting. Suddenly something grabbed their attention. A dehorned rhino walked into the scene. This was btw our second rhino sighting that evening. It was about 6:30 pm, the light became softer and we all felt this could become interesting. Indeed the lions, as if they realised this rhino was missing his primary weapon of defence, started chasing him up. He was running for his life , suddenly turned around charged into the lions to chase them away and then managed to escape.
Until this day I am wondering, were these guys serious or was it just a foolish inexperienced act...
My wife and I were relieved that the rhino got away. Finally the young lions started chasing some giraffes but these got away as well.
I guess the young boys went to sleep hungry.
We went to sleep with a bag full of memories.
Next day we returned to see if anything happened that night, the steenboksvlakte was in peace...
